Planning a Luxury Wedding at The American Club, Kohler

The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin is the Midwest’s most prestigious wedding venue — a Forbes Five-Star resort that has hosted celebrations for couples from across the country for decades. Planning a wedding here requires understanding the resort’s systems, spaces, and seasonal rhythms. We’ve been photographing at Destination Kohler for years. This is what we know.

The American Club Overview

The American Club is a Tudor-style hotel built in 1918 as a workers’ dormitory for Kohler Company employees. It was transformed into a luxury resort in 1981 and has held Forbes Five-Star status for over two decades — one of only a handful of hotels in the Midwest to have done so. The resort sits in Kohler Village, an architecturally-planned community of about 2,000 residents, and is surrounded by four championship golf courses, a world-class spa, and multiple dining outlets.

Wedding Ceremony Venues

The Grand Hall is The American Club’s signature ceremony space — a vaulted Tudor hall with exposed timber beams, leaded glass windows, and natural light that is warm and flattering throughout the day. It accommodates approximately 200 guests and has the kind of architectural permanence that makes every portrait feel significant.

The Wisconsin Room is more intimate — a paneled dining room ideal for celebrations of 50–80 guests. The wood-paneled walls, candlelight, and smaller scale create an atmosphere of genuine warmth.

The Carriage House offers a renovated barn aesthetic with original brick and contemporary appointments. This is the most flexible space in the resort for couples who want character without Tudor formality.

Golf Course Venues

Whistling Straits, located 20 minutes from The American Club in Haven, Wisconsin, is a Pete Dye-designed links course on Lake Michigan’s dramatic bluffs. Ceremony sites on the bluffs overlooking the lake are among the most photographically extraordinary in the entire Midwest — the Ryder Cup was held here in 2021. The Irish-links landscape, coastal light, and lake horizon create portraits unlike anything available at an inland venue.

Blackwolf Run sits adjacent to The American Club and offers riverfront ceremony sites along the Sheboygan River. The treeline reflections, stone bridges, and intimate river character create a completely different mood than the lake-facing venues.

River Wildlife is the most intimate space in the Kohler system — a 500-acre private woodland preserve accessible by a canoe ferry across the Sheboygan River. The log lodge, fire-lit rooms, and complete seclusion create a venue experience unlike anything in the resort. River Wildlife is ideal for rehearsal dinners or small ceremonies of 20–60 guests.

Timeline Considerations

Destination Kohler’s geographic spread creates unique timeline considerations. Whistling Straits is a 20-minute drive from The American Club — if you’re holding your ceremony at the resort and want portraits at Whistling Straits, build in transportation time. We recommend:

  • Ceremony at The American Club: 5:00 PM
  • Cocktail hour at the resort: 6:00–7:00 PM
  • Transportation to Whistling Straits for golden hour portraits: 7:15 PM departure
  • Golden hour portraits on the bluffs: 7:30–8:15 PM
  • Return to resort for reception: 8:30 PM

This requires guest cooperation and a detailed timeline agreement with your photographer. We’ve executed this sequence many times — it’s worth the coordination for the results at the lake.

Guest Logistics

Most American Club couples block rooms at the resort for their wedding weekend. Book your room block 12–18 months in advance — the resort fills during peak season. Consider a welcome reception at River Wildlife on Friday evening and farewell brunch in the Greenhouse restaurant on Sunday morning.

Working with the Kohler Team

The American Club’s catering and events team is among the most professional in Wisconsin. They have seen every wedding scenario and will anticipate logistics you haven’t considered. Build your vendor team with photographers, florists, and musicians who have Destination Kohler experience — familiarity with the property makes a measurable difference in execution.
