James Stokes & Co. is a luxury editorial wedding photography studio with roots in Central and Northern Wisconsin. We've photographed lakeside cabin weddings in Minocqua, ranch celebrations at Rondele Ranch in Harshaw, woodland retreats at Heartwood Conference Center in Trego, and coastal ceremonies at Northern Haus in Door County.
Northern Wisconsin weddings are different. They're weekend affairs where the venue is the landscape itself — the lake, the pines, the dock, the bonfire. The photography needs to match that energy: intimate, unhurried, and deeply grounded in the natural surroundings. That's how we've always worked.

Northern Wisconsin doesn't have traditional wedding venues in the conventional sense. The venues here are the landscape — private lake properties, family cabins passed down for generations, ranches carved out of the forest, and coastal retreats along the Door County peninsula. That's what makes these weddings extraordinary to photograph.
When the venue is the landscape, the photographer needs to know the land.
Northern Wisconsin weddings don't have a venue coordinator handing you a timeline. The ceremony is on a dock. The cocktail hour is around a bonfire. The portraits happen wherever the light is best — and that changes fast in the Northwoods. You need a photographer who reads the land, not just the schedule.
We grew up in this landscape. We know how afternoon light hits a north-facing shoreline. We know the difference between a Minocqua sunset and an Eagle River sunset. We shoot prime lenses, work in natural light, and let the Northwoods do what it does best — be beautiful without trying.
