Fifteen years of heritage editorial wedding photography across Wisconsin's most distinguished venues. Not trendy. Not templated. Timeless.
James Stokes & Co. is a fine art wedding photography studio based in Wisconsin, led by husband-and-wife team James and Katie Stokes. Founded in 2010, the studio has spent over fifteen years documenting weddings at Wisconsin's most prestigious venues — from the Forbes Five-Star American Club in Kohler to the Italian Renaissance terraces of Villa Terrace in Milwaukee to the lakefront resorts of Lake Geneva and the isthmus elegance of Madison.
Our approach is heritage editorial — a philosophy rooted in documentary honesty refined with editorial intention. We shoot exclusively with prime lenses (35mm, 50mm, 85mm), work in natural light, and build every portrait session around who you are, not around a preset formula. The result is fine art wedding photography that feels both deeply genuine and visually timeless — images built to be held for generations, not to chase a seasonal aesthetic.
Fine art wedding photography collections begin at $4,500. We serve couples across Wisconsin, Chicago, the Midwest, and destinations worldwide.
The fine art wedding photography market is filled with photographers chasing the same coastal aesthetic — light and airy presets, forced film looks, stylistic trends that age within a season. Our approach is different. We call it heritage editorial: editorial sophistication grounded in regional authenticity, the honesty of documentary photography, and a deep respect for the Midwestern landscape and light that defines where we work.
Fine art doesn't mean precious or fragile. It means intentional. Every lens choice, every timing decision, every portrait location is selected to serve the couple and the day — not a portfolio aesthetic. We use 35mm for environmental storytelling, 50mm for intimate documentary moments, and 85mm for portraits with weight and compression. No zoom lenses. No flash-lit formulas. Natural light, guided direction, and fifteen years of knowing when to lead and when to disappear.
The result is a wedding gallery that reads like an editorial feature — emotionally authentic, visually refined, and built to feel as relevant in thirty years as it does today.
Over fifteen years, we've built deep expertise across Wisconsin's most distinguished wedding corridors. We know the light, the logistics, and the venues in every market we serve.
Every fine art wedding begins with a consultation — not a sales call. We learn about your venue, your timeline, your family dynamics, and what matters most to you. From there, we build a detailed photography plan that accounts for light, logistics, and the emotional arc of your day.
On the wedding day, you work directly with James and Katie. No sales team. No hand-offs. No associate shooting in our place. Your final gallery is delivered as a curated collection of fully edited images in both color and black and white, with a private online gallery and full print release. Heirloom albums and fine art prints are available as bespoke additions.
"James & Katie were everything we could've hoped for in wedding photographers — and then some. From the moment they arrived, they brought such an easy-going, fun, and positive energy that instantly put us and everyone around us at ease."— Recent Couple
